Empathy in Psychoanalysis and Literary Analysis: An Issue as Illustrated in

Julian Barnes’s The Sense of an Ending

Psikanalizde ve Edebi Analizde Empati: Julian Barnes’ın Bir Son Duygusu Romanında Resmedilen Bir Mesele

Abstract: When the reader is engaged in analytic reading of literary texts, although s/he does not realistically have the characters’ complete story as the object of analysis in front of him/her, analytic process of some literary texts can be interpreted as psychoanalytical in terms of the process of building empathy with the characters and their illusional full story that the reader might find either familiar or unfamiliar to his/her lived experiences. Julian Barnes’s eleventh novel The Sense of an Ending, the winner of the Man Booker Prize 2011, exemplifies the similarity between empathic reading and psychoanalytic empathy built in the relationship between the analyst and the analysand. The Sense of an Ending distinguishes itself from Barnes’s other novels in that the unreliability of memory is posed as a difficult situation by the narrator himself who asks for empathy. Unlike the narrative voices in Barnes’s other novels, the one in this novel confesses his faults and regrets often in a confused and self-deceptive state of mind still asking for explanation and understanding like an analysand who tries to form a meaningful self-history through the guidance of his/her therapist and achieve insight and authenticity in his/her relationships. The novel also problematises the active status of the reader, questions his/her moral and ethical impetus while reading a fictional narrative and asks for his/her empathy to interpret and understand how the narrator Tony interprets his self in the past and the present. This study draws upon the parallelism between the hierarchical duet of analyst and analysand, and the non-hierarchical interaction between reader and text, and argues that both the analytic role of the reader, parallel to the analyst, and the complex/complicated mind of the narrator, parallel to the analysand, in Barnes’s The Sense of an Ending stage an activity similar to the one that takes place during the empathetic process of psychoanalysis. Therefore, this study also demonstrates the functional role of Barnes’s novel by emphasising the parallelism between the role of the reader’s unconscious during the process of understanding of the particular novel and the analyst’s unconscious working hard to balance the relationship between the analysand and his unconscious in the therapeutic process.

Özet: Okuyucu edebi metinlerin analitik okumasını yaptığı sırada, karakterlerin öyküsünü bir bütün olarak gerçekçi bir şekilde analiz nesnesi olarak ele almasa da bazı edebi metinlerin analiz süreci, okuyucunun kendi yaşam deneyimlerine tanıdık veya yabancı bulabileceği karakterlerle ve onların yanılsamalı öyküleriyle empati kurma süreci açısından psikanalitik olarak yorumlanabilir. Julian Barnes’ın 2011 Man Booker Ödülü'nü kazanan on birinci romanı The Sense of an Ending (Bir Son Duygusu), empatik okuma ile analist ve analiz edilen kişi arasındaki ilişkide kurulan psikanalitik empati arasındaki benzerliğe örnek teşkil eder. The Sense of an Ending (Bir Son Duygusu), Barnes'ın diğer romanlarından, hafızanın güvenilmezliğinin, empati isteyen anlatıcı tarafından zor bir durum olarak ortaya konmasıyla ayrılır. Barnes'ın diğer romanlarındaki anlatıcı seslerden farklı olarak, bu romandaki anlatıcı, sıklıkla kafa karışıklığı ve kendini kandırma hâli içinde, tıpkı terapistinin rehberliğinde anlamlı bir öz-tarih oluşturmaya ve ilişkilerinde içgörü ve özgünlük elde etmeye çalışan bir analiz hastası gibi, açıklama ve anlayış arayışı içinde hatalarını ve pişmanlıklarını itiraf eder. Roman ayrıca okuyucunun aktif konumunu sorunsallaştırır, kurgusal bir anlatıyı okurken ortaya çıkan ahlâki ve etik dürtüleri sorgular ve anlatıcı Tony’nin geçmişte ve şimdiki zamanda kendini nasıl yorumladığını anlamak ve bunu yorumlamak için okurun empati kurmasını ister. Bu çalışma, analist ve analiz edilen kişi arasındaki hiyerarşik ikili ilişki ile okuyucu ve metin arasındaki hiyerarşik olmayan etkileşim arasındaki paralelliğe dayanarak, Barnes’ın The Sense of an Ending (Bir Son Duygusu) adlı romanında analiste paralel okuyucunun analitik rolünün ve analiz edilen kişiye paralel anlatıcının karmaşık/kompleks zihninin, psikanalizin empatik sürecine benzer bir aktiviteyi ortaya koyduğunu savunmaktadır. Dolayısıyla, bu çalışma aynı zamanda Barnes'ın romanının işlevsel rolünü, okuyucunun romanı anlama sürecindeki bilinçaltının rolü ile analistin bilinçaltının, terapötik süreçte analiz edilen kişi ile bilinçaltı arasındaki ilişkiyi dengelemek için gösterdiği çaba arasındaki paralelliği vurgulayarak ortaya koymaktadır.
